puja

Exhibition

In 1873 the first Hindustani immigrants came from the former British Indian colonies to the former Dutch colony of Suriname to work there as contract workers. When Suriname became independent in 1975, about a third of the population emigrated to the Netherlands. Nowadays ten percent of the population in The Hague is from Surinamese Hindustani origin.

Puja means worship or honor in Sanskrit and is a ceremony of gratitude. The
two main areas where a puja is performed is at home and at public temples.
The project Puja is a photo project about traditions and rituals of the
Surinamese Hindu Sanatan Dharm community. It shows how different
generations in different cultures deal with their traditions and rituals.
